Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

At our school, we are committed to supporting every child’s personal, social, and emotional development. Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is an important part of this, helping children grow up feeling safe, confident, and respectful of themselves and others.

What is RSE?

RSE teaches children about healthy relationships, personal boundaries, emotions, and how to stay safe. It is age-appropriate and carefully planned to reflect the needs and maturity of primary-aged pupils.

What children will learn

In primary school, RSE focuses on:

  • Building positive friendships and treating others with kindness and respect
  • Understanding different types of families and relationships
  • Recognising and managing emotions
  • Learning about personal boundaries and privacy
  • Knowing how to stay safe, including online safety
  • Understanding basic facts about how their bodies grow and change

In the later years of primary school, children may also learn about the changes that happen during puberty, in a sensitive and supportive way.

How RSE is taught

RSE is taught through a combination of dedicated lessons and as part of wider subjects such as science, PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education), and assemblies. Lessons are delivered in a safe, inclusive environment where children feel comfortable asking questions.

Working with parents and carers

We recognise that parents and carers play a vital role in their child’s development. We aim to work in partnership with families by:

  • Sharing information about what will be taught
  • Providing opportunities to ask questions
  • Supporting conversations at home

Parents have the right to withdraw their child from certain elements of sex education (but not from statutory relationships or health education).

Our approach

Our RSE curriculum is:

  • Age-appropriate and inclusive
  • Respectful of all backgrounds and beliefs
  • Focused on promoting wellbeing and safeguarding
  • Designed to help children develop confidence and resilience
