Welcome to Xylophones!

Welcome to Xylophones Class. We are a group of 34 enthusiastic, motivated and resilient learners with a great attitude to achievement. Our teacher is Mrs. Forder and we are helped by Mrs. Ng and Mrs. Potter. Mrs. Higson also teaches us Computing and PE on a Wednesday afternoon.

Our days for PE are Tuesday (West Lancs Sport) and Wednesday when we need to come in our PE kits.

Our homework expectations are learning our weekly spellings, reading at least 3 times a week and Times Tables Rock Stars.

We are all really excited about the responsibilities that being in Year 6 brings - such as taking on the role as a prefect and house team captain. We are TCP's behaviour role models and we are always ready to rise to any challenge!

SAY HELLO TO OUR NEW HOUSE TEAM CAPTAINS!

THEME 2: EXTREME EARTH

Our theme is Extreme Earth and we will learn all about the differing and unpredictable climate and biomes of our planet. Our legend for this unit is Thomas Edison whose work links to the Science theme of 'Light.' In Art, we will be trying to capture the natural world in a series of landscape pictures in the style of key artists such as Monet, Van Gogh and Turner.

The Knowledge Organiser for this theme is attached below:

THEME 1: SET ME FREE

Our first theme unit this year is Set Me Free. During this theme we will be looking at the slave trade - both in terms of its history and important geographical locations - focusing on key figures such as our legend for this unit: Harriet Tubman, as well as investigating quilting and the meaning of different patterns.

The Knowledge Organiser for this theme is attached below:

HISTORY - THE SLAVE TRADE

Take a look at some of our amazing work that we've done learning about the slave trade.

BLACK HISTORY DAY 1.10.21 About - Chesterton Community College

The children at TCP recognised October as Black History Month with a day dedicated to learning. Xylophones learned all about the extraordinary life and works of Olaudah Equiano who was taught how to read and write and eventually bought his freedom. The work that he did to raise awareness of the conditions in which slaves were kept contributed to the 1833 Abolition Act which ended slavery in British Colonies.

We wrote letters to persuade the British Historical Society to erect a statue in his honour.

PE - TENNIS AT TCP!

On Friday, each class was given the opportunity to work with a professional tennis coach. We practiced accuracy in serving and returning through some fun games and competitions!

MUSIC - JAZZ, BLUES & GOSPEL

We've been learning 'Down By The Riverside'. Click on the link to sing along!

SCIENCE - ELECTRICITY

Our Science topic this term has been electricity. We've been making and testing circuits and carrying out investigations such as 'How does the length of the wire affect the brightness of the bulb' and how voltage works. We used all our knowledge and understanding to design an alarm to alert an aquarium to rising levels in a saltwater tank.

RE - HINDU DHARMA

This is Xylophones playing their RE themed board game 'Return To Moksha'. We learned about Hindu beliefs of reincarnation and karma and created our version of snakes and ladders. The winner was able to pass into Moksha using one of the 4 paths: knowledge, meditation, devotion or good works.

PSHE - HELLO YELLOW 8.10.21 Hello Yellow 2020 – Lynn Grove Academy

In partnership with Young Minds, Friday 8th october was TCP's annual HELLO YELLOW day. We discussed how everyone has mental health and how this can change from day to day just like our physical health. It is really important to look after your own mental health so we created superheroes who could come to our aid if ever we needed support. Year 6 enjoyed the photo booth too!
