Cellos
Welcome to our class of 30 wonderful Year 1 Superstars! We are all happy learners who always try our best. We know it is OK to make mistakes, as this helps us to learn.
Our teacher is Mrs Marshall and we are lucky to be supported at various times throughout the week by Mrs Ashton, Mrs Bridge and Mrs Brown.
We are all looking forward to a fun and successful year. We are especially excited to go swimming and participate at Forest School this year.
We will have 5 theme blocks each year with lots of exciting curriculum learning in each block.
Block 5 - Home Sweet Home
Block 4 - Innovators
The inflatable challenge!
Aeroplanes
As part of our Innovators theme, we have enjoyed learning about the Wright brothers and Amelia Earhart. We had a fun afternoon making our own paper aeroplanes and flying them outside!
And the winner is...
PE
We enjoyed a cross curricular PE session, where we used our bodies to make bridges. We made bridge shapes individually, in pairs and in small groups. We put our bridges to the test by pretending to be trains travelling under or through the bridges. We made some very creative bridges!
Design Technology
In Design Technology we designed, made and evaluated our own bridges. Our design brief was to make a bridge that was strong enough for the 3 Billy Goats Gruff and also quiet enough not to wake the troll. We worked in groups and all made fantastic bridges. Mr. Forder, an engineer visited us and told us all about his job. He tested all our bridges and chose the best bridges for design and strength.
The Coronation of King Charles III
Year 1 loved learning all about King Charles and what a Coronation ceremony entails. They wrote all about King Charles and his Coronation along with what makes the Coronation special to them. We made bunting to decorate our classroom. All children completed a portrait of King Charles on a canvas. We enjoyed learning a special song for the King. In class we acted out our very own Coronations, including taking the oath, being anointed with the Holy oil, receiving the Orb and Sceptre and being officially crowned. Watch the adorable videos! All the children were looking forward to watching the Coronation on TV and spotting all the things we have been learning about including St Edward's crown and the 700 year old Coronation chair.
Bridges
We have learned all about what a Beam bridge is and a Suspension bridge. We had fun making a human Suspension bridge and a model version. We were learning how bridges are so strong and discovered it was because of the use of triangles. We enjoyed making triangle structures with sweets!
To begin our 'Innovators' theme, the children were given a scenario that a teddy had been lost on the other side of the river. How can we rescue it? In groups they had to work out how... by building a bridge. They used lots of resources in our outdoor area to build a bridge to rescue the teddy. It was lots of fun and a great way to start our new theme!
The children were set a challenge to try and make a bridge just out of an A4 piece of paper and no other equipment. Their bridge needed to be strong enough to hold 8 multilink cubes. I was very impressed with their engineering skills. We quickly realised the more folds and the tighter the folds the stronger the paper bridge was. We progressed to try and 'corrugate' the paper to make it even stronger.
Science - All about Materials
In our Science work this theme, we are learning all about Materials. We have enjoyed a treasure hunt outside looking for hidden objects. Once they were all found, the children had to identify what their object was made from. We grouped the objects by their material. We had fun on a photo material hunt around school in small groups. We have moved onto focusing on what the object and materials feel like and describing their properties. We look forward to the rest of our Science work.
Noun Town
In English we were learning all about nouns. To help us understand better we made a fantastic display and labelled all the nouns in the town!
Easter Peg Hunting
Thank you to the Friends of TCP for organising an exciting Easter egg hunt for us all. We decorated a peg, it was hidden by Friends of TCP, then we had to find our peg. Once we found it we were kindly given an Easter egg. It was eggcellent!
No Outsiders
For our No Outsiders, we have enjoyed reading, discussing and role playing the story ‘That’s not how you do it’ by Ariane Hofmann-Maniyar. The important message we took from this story is that it is OK to be different. In the story they make a night sky full of stars. We made our own and all our stars were different, which we all agreed was a good thing!
Yoga Festival
We enjoyed our session within the Yoga festival which was run by Katie from South Ribble.
RE - Judaism
The children have been learning about the Jewish festival ‘Sukkot’. A key part of this festival is the ‘Sukkah’, a temporary structure which is built to spend the duration of the festival in. We enjoyed making our own small world version.
Block 3 - London's Burning!
Science Week
Year 1 have enjoyed their Science week. It was interesting learning all about the Scientist John Dunlop. We carried out an experiment to find which balls bounced the furthest, the result being the football because it was filled with the most air. It bounced back 163cm. We also explored sound and hearing, and the importance of handwashing as germs spread quickly. We spread glitter germs! One of the highlights was our visit from Scientist Steve who made ice cream using liquid nitrogen. It was yummy! We enjoyed our Zoom meetings with a Year 1 class in Bromley who were also learning about John Dunlop.
All about me! - Poems
In English we have been writing sentences and list poems all about ourselves. We used the sentence starters 'I like, I love, I am, My' for example. We also wrote similes to describe ourselves. We recorded our favourite line from our poems for you to watch.
Music - Hey You!
Watch our performance of Hey you! We have been playing the Glockenspiels and singing in 2 parts. We especially loved to rap!

We enjoyed meeting Alex from Hesketh Bank Christian Centre, Salim, an acrobat from Kenya and a Muslim from a Mosque in Preston. We also benefitted from lots of mindfulness activities such as Go Noodle, colouring and Yoga. We all made ourselves a worry peg doll to take home too.
World Book Day 2023!
Year 1 had a great time for Book day. After reading 'The Word Collector' we began collecting our own words. We now have words everywhere even on our windows! The children enjoyed sharing their favourite bedtime story with their friends and collecting interesting words. We painted a collection of kind, positive and friendly words which you can see brightening up the fence outside our classroom. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who came to read with us and share a hot chocolate.

We have been busy creating fantastic Fire of London themed moving pictures in our Design Technology lesson, learning to use slider and lever mechanisms. In Art we have been practicing colour mixing and created our wonderful Fire of London silhouettes. We have learnt lots of new skills!
Music
As part of our theme we have proudly written a class song, composing the percussion instruments to go with our song. We wrote the words together to the tune of 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'. Our song shows our superb knowledge of the Fire of London too!
A fire engine visited us today!
We were very lucky this morning when John and his crew visited us with the fire engine! We loved wearing the helmet, walking through the fire engine and watching Fireman Aaron squirt the water. New recruit Mrs Marshall tried the fire hose and pretended to squirt all the children! The children learnt lots of important information about if they needed to call 999, they need to know their house number and name of their road. They now know they must shout 'FIRE' and not help if they see a fire or smoke at home. They also were told all about 'Stop, drop and roll'. We made a thank you card to send to the fire station. We are going to write all about our special visit this week.
