Double Basses
Welcome to the Double Basses class!
We are a class of 30 Year 2 children who enjoy every opportunity to work and play together. We share a classroom with Mrs Bruzzese and Mrs Wright.
Our P.E lessons are on Monday and Friday so we need to come to school in our P.E kit on these days. On Tuesday afternoon Mrs Bruzzese lends us to Mrs Wright for the afternoon and we learn about PSHE.
We try to read a few pages of our books every night so that we can become 'Super Readers!'
In our blue reading bag we will continue to bring home 2 reading books- a phonics book which we can read to you which we will keep for the week and a banded book to read together with an adult . The banded book can be changed whenever we have read, in the same way as previous years.
Each Friday we choose a library book to take home for a week to share with our family.
Our spelling homework is given out on a Friday and we have our spelling test on Friday morning each week.
We each have a login for Times Tables Rockstars https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth/school/student/54721 to play games and learn our times tables and we can play on https://whiterosemaths.com/1-minute-maths to help us to practice our arithmetic skills in a fun way.
We have an exciting year ahead and we look forward to learning lots of new things.
Sports Day 2023
Double Basses had a wonderful time this afternoon at sports day. They bounced, balanced, ran, and skipped like true Olympians!
Fleetwood Museum Trip
Year 2 have had an amazing time today at Fleetwood Museum. We spent the day learning all about Victorian holidays at the seaside in preparation for our new theme starting after half term. We made a souvenir, dressed up and had a photograph (we weren't allowed to smile!), visited a boarding house and learned about steam trains. We finished our visit with a very funny Punch and Judy show and a picnic overlooking the seaside. The children behaved beautifully and the museum staff commented on how well behaved and polite they were. What an excellent day we had!
No Outsiders
Yoga
Today we explored our Yoga skills again. We remembered lots of the moves and felt really calm at the end of our lesson.
No Outsiders
This week we have been learning about what makes people feel proud in our No Outsiders lesson. We read The Odd Egg by Emily Gravett and acted out the story, exploring how Duck felt when his egg hatched and the baby crocodile was born. We drew pictures of the egg hatching and wrote about what Duck said to his egg. We felt sad when we read that the other creatures said 'That's not a real family!' It was a great lesson and we learned that all families are real and special and that Duck was right to be proud of his baby.
Science Week 2023
This week we have been learning about Connections alongside our partner school in London. We studied John McAdam and learned about how to create effective road surfaces. We discovered that the surfaces which had been pressed down and compacted created the best surface for our car to drive along. We learned about road surfaces of the future and the work of Julie Brusaw who has invented road pieces that are hard enough to drive on but also use the Sun’s energy to generate electricity. Our ideas for possible future roads were amazing and proved that we will change the world for the better one day!
We had a visit from Dr Steve, who showed us how to create ice cream with liquid Nitrogen- we even got to taste it!
We really enjoyed investigating how to make a working telephone with paper cups and fishing line. We were amazed when we explored vibration and then could hear our friends from across the corridor!
We had a great time and learned a lot about Science!
RE and PSHE Day 6.3.23
We are had a great time today learning about Christianity, Islam, mindfulness and yoga. We learned al lot and we were very relaxed and calm when we got home!
World Book Day 2023
Today the Year 2 children had a wonderful day exploring words using the story The Word Collector by Peter H. Reynolds. We collected words, used dictionaries to find out their meanings and had fun throwing our words in the air to share our words with each other, just like Jerome in the story. We described the main character from our favourite bedtime stories and created 'gingerbread' people to share our words with everyone.
We created our own book covers and put ourselves in the story and created amazing stories. Mrs Bruzzese's favourite part of the day was creating our word path leading out of our classroom. Thank you to all our parents who came to join us to share bedtime stories and hot chocolate at the end of our lovely day.
KS1 Christmas Party
Key Stage 1 had lots of fun at their Christmas Party. There was lots of dancing, singing, laughing and playing games. The children all enjoyed a very special visit from Father Christmas. They enjoyed their yummy party food treats and played more games such as pass the parcel and Musical Statues.
No Outsiders Autumn 2
Today in our No Outsiders lesson we learned about diversity. First we listened to The Big Book of Families. The Great Big Book of Families represents a lovely diverse mix of different types of families, reminding us that families come in all shapes and sizes, from single parent families to same sex couple parents, grandparents that live with us, extended families, blended families and many more.
We talked about our families, drew them and learned that every family is unique and special.
Enterprise Week 2022
Monday has been a busy day! We set up our company ‘Fantastic Christmas Store’ around our board meeting tables and began to make one of our products Marshmallow Candy Cane Snowman treats. We made posters, which we have brought home and designed logos. This afternoon Dr Andrea Brooks came to talk to us about how she set up her business. We asked great questions and learned a lot. We are really looking forward to designing our next product tomorrow.
Forest School -Autumn 2
Year 2 are having lots of fun at Forest School this half term. From making a muddy handprint flag to hide and seek. Lots of fun exploring with many adventures to come! It was the perfect conditions for toasting marshmallows at Forest School this afternoon. Double Basses enjoyed their marshmallows and S'mores. It also became apparent that you never grow out of having fun getting muddy!
Anti-Bullying Day 2022
What a great day! We talked about 'Reaching out' if we needed help. As a groups we drew and celebrated our similarities and differences. We drew who we would reach out to if we needed help and support and remembered times when we needed support. We created wrist bands and designed odd socks to celebrate 'Odd Socks Day'. We listened to Andy and the Odd Socks singing the Anti bullying song for 2022. Please click below to listen to the song.
Remembrance Week 2022
This week we have been learning about child evacuation during WW2. We learned about key events in WW2 and then focused on what it would have felt like to be a child during the war and to be evacuated from our homes. We watched video clips, listened to first hand accounts on the internet, looked at pictures and read stories to help us to understand. Our favourite story was The Wrong Suitcase where we explored what we would take with us if we were evacuated. It was very tricky to decide what to take, especially as we could only take 1 special toy! On Friday we dressed up as evacuees and role played. We even took part in the whole school assembly!
During the week we also compared evacuation to modern day refugees by reading the story of The Journey by Francesca Sanna. Please click below to listen to the story.
Hello Yellow and Children in Need Countryfile Ramble Day 21.10.22
Today we thought about our strengths and drew our own Superhero. We had fun in our Hello Yellow photo booth! Later in the day, we walked with our friends, parents, grandparents to Carr Lane Woods for our annual Countryfile Ramble. We had great fun and hope to have raised lots of money!

The children worked really hard and , by the end of the session, some had really changed their mindset. Please click below to listen to the story...
Black History Day 7th October 2022
Today in Double Basses' class, to celebrate Black History Day, we learned about the American astronaut Dr Mae Jemison, the first Black woman in space. We created fact rockets, timelines and wrote a paragraph about her to show our learning. What an amazing role model she is!
