Welcome to Trumpets Class!

Welcome to Trumpets Class. We are hardworking bunch of 35 learners supported in our work by Mr Glaister, Mrs Potter, Mrs Cookson, Mrs Brown and Mrs Smith. We need to come to school in our P.E. kits  on Tuesdays and Fridays. On Tuesday afternoons we are taught by Mrs Potter and Mrs Cookson and on Thursday afternoons we have PSHE and RE with the fantastic Mrs Wren and Mrs Moores.

A big thank you to our parents, carers and people from home for helping us with our spellings, reading and Times Tables Rock Stars homework which is set on Fridays.

We know that mistakes happen when we learn and we take a Growth Mindset approach to learning – keep putting in the effort and learning from mistakes and we will succeed! We know the power of the word YET!

Lancashire Day!

For Lancashire Day 2023, Trumpets Class looked at Google Maps, Google Earth and an OS map representation of Lancashire. From this, we identified physical and human features. We then used these features to write a paragraph about how the physical features of Lancashire have affected the human settlement. We also wrote down our favourite and least favourite things about Lancashire from a geographical perspective.

Block 5 - A Kingdom United!

Please find below the knowledge organiser for our latest block!

The Coronation of King Charles III

For our art work this morning, Trumpets Class looked at portraits of Queen Elizabeth the second so we understood that royal portraits are made to commemorate important occasions like a coronation.

Then, we looked at a self-portrait by L.S. Lowry who we’re studying in our art unit. We practised sketching King Charles in the style of Lowry.

We then had time to investigate oil pastels which we used to add colour to our portraits.

We also found the answers to these three key questions:

Who is King Charles III?

King Charles III is the first-born son of Queen Elizabeth II and he became king when she died last year.

He has two brothers, Andrew and Edward and a sister, Anne.

He has two children; William and Harry who have provided him with 5 grandchildren.

What is a coronation?

The word coronation comes from “corona” which means crown and “tion” which means to do something.

A coronation is a religious ceremony where the new king or queen makes promises before their people and before God. They promise to uphold the law and the church and they promise to serve.

The coronation ceremony goes back nearly 1,000 years to William I who was the first king to undergo the coronation in 1066.

Why is the coronation special?

A coronation is special because it doesn’t come around very often; the last one was 70 years ago!

It is important because it is part of our history, culture and tradition.

The new monarch makes promises to serve us, their people, and to uphold the law which are important and solemn things.

No Outsiders

For No Outsiders this week, UKS2 have read The Cow Who Climbed A Tree by Gemma Merino. In the story, Tina (a cow) wants to adventure and has a thirst for knowledge and understanding whereas her sisters just want to eat juicy grass. Tina ends up taking flying lessons with a dragon and her sisters go to stop her but when they see her... well you'll have to read it!
We designed parachutes detailing things we wanted to do but had some apprehension about and then created positive affirmations to help us be more Tina!

No Outsiders

From reading “The Island” we learned about racism and the fear of the other. We decided we didn’t want Tarleton to be like The Island and so created banners to welcome refugees instead of being suspicious of them simply for being different.

BLOCK 4 - Down't Mill

Please find below the knowledge organiser for our latest block - Down't Mill! We will be looking at the Industrial Revolution, map and field work and materials and their properties.

RE & PSHE Day!

For our inaugural RE and PSHE Day we had a lot of different activities planned! We first had a talk from a Muslim believer all about his faith and the new mosque that had been built - it looked beautiful inside. We then went to meet Salim who is originally from Kenya. He told us all about his fascinating life in Kenya (very different to ours) before he joined the circus and ended up in the UK in 2006. He had some excellent moves to show us, well he is an acrobat after all! Following this, we met Alex from Hesketh Bank Christian Centre who told us all about his faith and the different activities that the centre offers. We also found time to complete some mindfulness mandala colouring before spending the afternoon with Dave and Paul from the police who told us all about the common crimes they see young people involved in and how to avoid them, how to stay safe online and they also put Mrs Forder in handcuffs and let us try on their uniform and go inside a riot van! What a great day :)

World Book Day 2023

For World Book Day this year we focused on the book "The Word Collector" by Peter H. Reynolds. In the book, Jerome collects words that he finds interesting and amazing! He ends up sharing them with the world and people love his words. We became word detectives and found our own amazing words from the books in school and ones we had brought in from home. We made posters to advertise our words so everyone can share in them!

No Outsiders

Our No Outsiders text this half term is "The Whisperer" by Nick Butterworth. We read the story which contains themes of discrimination and difference, then created posters to detail how the things that make us similar are more important than the things that set us apart.

BLOCK 3 - AMAZON ADVENTURE

Our next block of learning is called Amazon Adventure! We will be learning about the rain forest, printing and collaging and animal and plant life cycles. Please find the knowledge organiser below.

Science - water resistance

On Friday afternoon, Trumpets Class learned all about water resistance! We know it is a push force that requires energy to overcome. We then designed and made our own boats out of lolly sticks, sellotape, scissors and an old sock! We checked if they floated and then propelled them across a tray of water to check how well they overcame water resistance.

Paralympic Festival

Last Friday, Trumpets Class were fortunate to be able to take part in a Paralympic Festival! We began by discussing different disabilities and how it is fair for people who have these disabilities to take part in sport. We then did curling, throwing and football but with a difference! We had to sit down for our throwing (as if we were in a wheelchair) and we were blindfolded for our football!

No Outsiders

"WE ALL DESERVE FOR OUR DIFFERENCES TO BE EMBRACED AS STRENGTHS."
UKS2 have been looking at My Princess Boy by Cheryl Kilodavis which is all about her son, Dyson, who loves pink and dresses and sparkling things! His family are very supportive of him but the wider world isn't always as understanding.
We talked about Dyson and how, if he came to TCP, we would be very supportive of him and make him feel welcome. This discussion also branched out into LGBT issues and we talked about how Dyson may just want to wear dresses or he may be trans or gay but it didn't matter as long as he was true to himself.
We then designed dresses to reflect our own diversity and the wider diversity of the world.

Enterprise Week

This week, Trumpets Class have been working hard on our Enterprise tasks. To begin the week, we had a wonderfully informative visit from Dave Birkbeck and the team from GBA. Dave took us through how the company began and how it has grown to where it is now. He talked about the importance of customer service and delivering a quality outcome for consumers.

We then got to work creating our company logo, learning about profit and loss and planning out our making process. We can't wait to finish our Christmas gonks and make lots of money for the school!

Remembrance Week

For Remembrance Week 2022, Trumpets Class focused on the code breakers of World War Two. We studied how the Enigma Code gave the Axis powers the upper hand until Alan Turing invented his 'Bombe' that could decipher the hidden messages, changing the course of the war. We also learned about how Alan Turing was convicted of being gay (which was illegal until 1967) and how we felt about that given that he saved an estimated fourteen million lives and shortened the war by up to two years.

BLOCK 2 - THE GOLDEN AGE

Trumpets' Class second block of learning is going to be focused around the Islamic Golden Age! In this unit of work we will look at the history of the Islamic Empire, study Baghdad in our geography lessons and look at cams and pulleys (linked to the inventions of the golden age) in our design & technology lessons.

Please find the knowledge organiser for The Golden Age below.

Hello Yellow

On Friday 21st October, Trumpets class celebrated Hello Yellow mental health day! We discussed what mental health was, when to be worried about ourselves and others and how we can help our own mental health. We used this to create our own mental health superheroes!

Jodrell Bank!

On Tuesday 18th February, Trumpets class went on an exciting trip to Jodrell Bank! We saw the amazing Lovell Telescope and learned that it was, in fact, a radio telescope. In the First Light Pavilion we were treated to an amazing show inside the Space Dome, zooming around our solar system and learning lots of interesting information. From there, we went to the First Light Exhibition and used the interactive exhibits to learn more about the history of Jodrell Bank. After lunch (and a lovely view of the Lovell Telescope) we went to the Star Pavilion for a fascinating talk in the Wolfson Auditorium all about the history of telescopes, the Moon landings and much much more!

Black History Day

For Black History Day this year Trumpets Class learned about Jackson Robinson. He was a black man, born in 1919, who faced adversity and barriers because of the colour of his skin. He never gave up, challenged the existing status quo and rose to become one of the best baseball players in U.S. history.

BLOCK 1 - THE FINAL FRONTIER!

The first theme for Trumpets Class this year is all about space, abstract art and film scores! We cannot wait to get stuck into our learning. Please check out the knowledge organiser for this unit below and keep your eyes peeled for more of our work as we go through this unit!
